Description

When Beethoven first presented himself to Viennese society, he performed some of his own compositions and, most importantly, by improvising on themes of his own or of his rivals. Such exhibitions of power and improvisation drew people to Beethoven’s art and genius. Years later, Beethoven realized he was going deaf, and his initial reaction was terror and shame. He tried to keep it a secret. He feared he was being cut off from other people, losing the possibility of hearing intimate conversation. His fear brought on a serious depressive state of mind in Beethoven. Later in life, Napolean Bonaparte brought hope and recognition for Beethoven by commissioning to write some of Beethoven’s greatest works.
